The House of Representatives recently passed for second reading a bill aiming to amend the constitution to create additional seats exclusively for women in the National and State Assemblies.

The proposed amendment, spearheaded by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and supported by other lawmakers, seeks to address the longstanding issue of gender inequality in Nigeria's political landscape.

If enacted, it would reserve one senatorial and one House seat for women in each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) thereby creating additional 74 seats.

Additionally, the bill seeks to amend Section 91 of the document to provide three special seats reserved exclusively for women in the Houses of Assembly of each state of the federation, which shall be spread across the three senatorial districts of each state.

The issue of gender parity and women's participation in politics usually sparks diverse opinions and debates.

So, the question is, why is there a pressing need for additional seats specifically allocated to women? What does it tend to achieve?

Take a listen.
