Woman Arrested for DWI After Driving Without Tires (0.18% BAC)

On April 10, 2024 around 10:14 PM, Patrolman Joseph Vogt with the Mount Ephraim Police Department was on patrol on Black Horse Pike. He heard plastic scraping the ground, and he noticed that a black 2018 Nissan Altima with severe front-end damages that was driving erratically. A few moments prior, Mount Ephraim Police had also received a call reporting a motor vehicle crash, and he attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop. As he was pursuing the vehicle, Patrolman Vogt located a shredded tire on Black Horse Pike near Fourth Avenue. He exited his patrol car to remove the tire from the road, and a passerby informed him that the vehicle he was pursuing was parked on Hill Street. Patrolman Vogt canvassed the area and located the vehicle near Hill Street on E Buckingham Avenue. 
Patrolman Vogt approached the vehicle to make contact with the driver, who was later identified as Corissa. Corissa seemed to be asleep as he first approached the car. He asked Corissa to roll down the window and turn off the vehicle. As he was speaking with Corissa, he detected the odor of alcohol and noticed other signs of impairment. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Corissa was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. 
Patrolman Kind initially administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Patrolman Kind observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. He also observed vertical gaze nystagmus. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, which was administered by Patrolman Vogt. During the Walk and Turn test, Corissa did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and failed to keep her arms at her sides. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Corissa failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while not counting as in the correct sequence. 
Based on the motor vehicle accident, the odor of alcohol, the open containers of alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Corissa was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Her vehicle was searched incident to arrest and the officers found 4 open containers. Corissa was initially transported to the Audubon Police Department for further processing. Sergeant Dobleman stayed with the vehicle until it was towed for a mandatory 12-hour impound as required by John’s Law. 
At the Audubon Police Department, Patrolman Vogt read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Patrolman Kind operated the machine, and her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.18%, which was more than double the limit of 0.08%. Corissa was then transported to the Mount Ephraim Police Department for further processing.
After she was processed, Corissa was released to her boyfriend pending her court appearance after he signed the Potential Liability Warning form on her behalf. Patrolman Vogt issued her the following summonses: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, driving without a license, failure to possess driver license, failure to possess driver registration, open container of alcohol, and unsafe tires
Court records indicate that on May 25, 2024, Corissa was arrested again for DWI in Berkeley Township, New Jersey. As of July 11, 2024, both cases are currently pending in court.
