Michel Foucault's The History of Sexuality is a critical analysis of the history of Western attitudes towards sex, challenging the common assumption that sexuality was repressed in the 17th and 18th centuries. He argues that the Victorian era, rather than repressing sexuality, actually saw a surge in discourse about sex through the creation of new regulations and institutions. He argues that sexuality is inextricably linked to power structures and that institutions and societal norms do not repress sex, but rather regulate, define, and deploy it for a variety of purposes. The book explores the evolution of sexuality from a focus on a confession-based model of truth to a more scientific, medicalized model of power and knowledge, known as scientia sexualis. This shift, according to Foucault, occurred in the late 19th century and brought with it new ways of understanding and controlling sexuality.
